Born on November 28, 1926, in Los Angeles, California, Turman was drawn to the world of storytelling from a young age. He studied at the University of California, Los Angeles, where he nurtured his love for film. He then proceeded to earn a master's degree from the Columbia University School of the Arts.

In 1967, Turman produced "The Graduate", which is often considered one of the defining films of the American New Wave. The film received seven Academy Award nominations and won the Oscar for Best Director. Its impact on popular culture was significant, capturing the zeitgeist of a generation grappling with societal changes.
